How Maine’s casinos are laid out
For the size of the state, Maine’s casino map is sparse. Two commercial properties cover the whole of it, with no tribal floors and nothing clustered together. The two sit a couple of hours apart and serve different halves of Maine’s populated south and center.
Hollywood Casino Hotel & Raceway is in Bangor, in the central part of the state on the Penobscot River. For the Portland metro and the Lewiston and Auburn area, the bulk of the state’s population, Oxford is the nearer casino.

Oxford Casino Hotel holds the larger floor, around 27,000 square feet with close to a thousand slots and more table games than Bangor. Churchill Downs runs it, and an attached hotel opened in 2017. It sits within reach of Portland, Lewiston, and Auburn, which is why it is the busier of the two and the default casino for southern and western Maine.

Why Maine has no tribal casinos
Maine is one of the few states with federally recognized tribes but no tribal casino, and the reason is a single law. The 1980 Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act settled the Wabanaki Nations’ land claims but placed the tribes outside the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act framework that lets tribes elsewhere open casinos on their own terms. For decades that left gaming entirely to the two commercial floors.
